Our Services

Heathcote Health is a leading small rural health service located 90 minutes north of Melbourne via the Northern Highway, and 40 minutes south-east of Bendigo via the McIvor Highway. We are a 9-bed public facility which provides public and private acute care, 24 hour urgent care, district nursing, and a broad range of community and home-based services. Heathcote Health also has a 42-bed residential aged care facility.
Our catchment provides services to the Heathcote community and its surroundings. Heathcote Health is one of the largest employer in Heathcote with over 200 staff caring for our community.

Acute Ward

On our Acute Ward we have 9 beds, 2 of these are palliative care rooms and 2 are allocated to the TCP program.

What do we do?

Our nurses are highly trained with Registered Nurses maintaining Advanced Cardiac Life Support accreditation and are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We strive to provide excellent care to our community that meets their expectations.

Doctors from the St Antonys, Heathcote Primary Health clinic provide support during the week and are available on call after hours on weekdays.

Patients are admitted under the care of the GPs and in consultation with the nurse in charge.

What can you expect?

High quality care from our nursing staff. In addition, Allied Health staff are available onsite and are involved in your care if required. Our hotel and
support services staff (kitchen, cleaning and maintenance) work closely with the nursing staff and are integral in making your stay as comfortable as possible. Discharge planning is undertaken by our staff in consultation with you. You will be provided with an up to date medication list, follow up
appointments and services that have been organised to help you once you are home.

We are fully accredited under standards developed by the Australian National Safety and Quality Health Service Commission.

Urgent Care Centre

Our Urgent Care Centres operate 24 hours a day and seven days a week. For life threatening emergencies including chest pain, snake bites, serious injuries and possible fractures, please do not delay and call 000 for an ambulance.

Where is our Urgent Care Centre located?

Heathcote Health Urgent Care Centre can be accessed via the front of hospital – please press door bell for assistance.

What do we do?

Our Urgent Care Centre is a walk in service for people with minor illnesses and injuries requiring immediate attention. The centre is not staffed 24 hours but will be attended by our nurses from the Acute ward as needed. Depending on your clinical needs, the nurse may consult with one of our GPs or with VVED – Victorian Virtual Emergency Department (an off-site telehealth service).

If you are seen by one of the GPs you will incur an out of pocket fee Our nurses are highly trained Registered Nurses who maintain annual Advanced Cardiac Life Support accreditation and advanced assessment capabilities. We also have a small number of Rural and Isolated Practice Registered Nurses (RIPRNs). RIPRNS are nurses who can administer a small, and controlled amount of medications without the prescription of a GP or Health Service doctor.

What can you expect?

When you arrive you will be assessed by one of our nurses and triaged accordingly. The most urgent cases will be seen first.  If you require care that cannot be provided by us, you will be transferred to a larger hospital, usually Bendigo Health Emergency Department. If you are transferred by ambulance, you are responsible for the cost. For Ambulance Victoria members and pensioners this cost will be covered.

Not sure when to use the Urgent Care Centre?

Urgent Care Centres are for those who require immediate attention for minor injuries and illnesses
Our aim is to provide the most appropriate care for you as close to your home as possible.
If you require medical advice for a general condition, contact your GP during business hours.

Transitonal Care Program

What is the Transition Care Program (TCP)?

We aim to support older individuals to recover after a hospital stay to achieve further improvements in function with the plan to continue to live independently.

We provide short-term care and services for people aged over 65, as they transition from an acute hospital to either home or long term care.

What do we do?

TCP can be offered in your home (home-based) or in our hospital (bed-based) and can help you to have more time in a supported environment before returning home or into long term accommodation. Where you receive transition care will depend on what the best place is for your recovery.  It is also possible to transfer from one care setting to the other.

TCP can provide you with a package of services after your hospital stay, this may include:

Accommodation in a supported acute care facility or services at home

  • Nursing
  • Allied Health services
  • Social Work support
  • Personal care
  • Cleaning
  • Meal assistance
  • Support or transport for appointments
  • Some equipment needs
  • In home respite
  • Social activities

What can you expect?

To qualify for TCP you will need to be assessed and approved by the Aged Care Assessment Service (ACAS) while in hospital.

As a goal-based program, the nursing and allied health staff will work closely with you, your family or carer, to set your individual goals and choose services that will best suit your needs. We aim to assist you to achieve further improvements in function with the plan of continuing to live independently, or, alternatively make appropriate long-term care arrangements.

The average duration of the program is up to 12 weeks.

Is there a cost?

Heathcote Health waivers the daily fee for TCP, however you may be asked to cover the cost of your own medication.

A Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a Registered Nurse with the experience, expertise and authority to diagnose and treat people of all ages with a variety of acute or chronic health conditions. NPs have completed additional university study at Master’s degree level and are the most senior and independent clinical nurses in our health care system. The title “Nurse Practitioner” can only be used by a person who has been endorsed by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.

Nurse Practitioners work as key members of the healthcare team and collaborate with other nurses and healthcare professionals including GPs, medical and surgical specialists, physiotherapists, dieticians, occupational therapists, social workers, and many others. They work in a variety of locations, both in hospital and community settings.

Occupational Therapist

Occupational Therapist’s (or OTs) promote health and wellbeing by facilitating participation in occupations that provide meaning and purpose in life. Occupations refer to everyday activities such as looking after your own needs, performing household duties, being involved in community activities, work or study, and pursuing leisure activities. During periods of illness, following injury, or due to disability, our capacity to do the things we want to do, need to do, and are expected to do can be impacted. Your OT will assist you to return to the occupations which are important to you.

At Heathcote Health our OT works with:

  • Residents in our Residential Aged Care Home
  • Consumers participating in the Transition Care Program
  • Consumers of the Support at Home Program

Some things your OT might work with you on include:

  • Training and practice in a specific occupational task
  • Pressure injury prevention and management
  • Upper limb rehabilitation
  • Training in compensatory strategies
  • Home modification and assistive technology recommendations
  • Strategies to manage your mental health

Physiotherapist

Physiotherapists are health care professionals that focus on the prevention, assessment, diagnosis and treatment of a range of conditions that may impact a person’s function. They work with people effected by injury, illness or disability to help them recover and/ or improve their movement and functioning of their body.

Physiotherapists assist in assessment and diagnosis of a person’s condition to identify the underlying cause of their impairment or pain. They develop treatment plans tailored to a person’s goals and guide people through their rehabilitation programs to achieve the desired outcome. Physiotherapy involves a broad range of interventions including exercise, manual therapy and education to improve function, reduce pain and prevent further injury or illness.

Conditions treated by a Physiotherapist include musculoskeletal issues (e.g. back pain, Osteoarthritis), sports injuries (e.g. sprains, strains), neurological conditions (e.g. Stroke, Parkinson’s disease) and cardiorespiratory conditions (e.g. COPD, post cardiac surgery).

At Heathcote Health our Physiotherapist works with:

  • Hospital inpatients
  • Consumers participating in the Transitional Care Program
  • Consumers of the Support at Home Program

Health Promotion

Health promotion is about helping individuals and communities take greater control over their own health and wellbeing. Rather than treating illness after it happens, our health promotion work focuses on prevention and reducing health risks before they become health problems, and creating everyday conditions that make it easier for our community to live well.

What we do

Heathcote Health provides primary prevention programs and activities designed to support our community’s health long before people need clinical care. We work closely in partnership with a range of local prevention and health-promoting organisations, including:

  • Bendigo Community Health Services
  • Healthy Loddon Campaspe
  • Women’s Health Loddon Mallee
  • Loddon Mallee Public Health Unit
  • Sports Focus
  • Heathcote Community House
  • Bendigo Health
  • City of Greater Bendigo Council

We take part regularly in relevant meetings, networking events and forums to make sure Heathcote’s needs are represented regionally.

Heathcote Health Directory

Finding Services in Your Community
The Heathcote Health Directory makes it easier for local residents to find and connect with non-clinical community services and supports. Whether you’re looking for something for yourself or helping a family member find the right support, the directory is designed to point you in the right direction quickly.
Heathcote Health Directory – Finding Services in Your Community

Our Current Health Promotion Priorities

The activities below align with the Victorian Public Health and Wellbeing Plan and the 2023–2033 VicHealth Strategy. Each priority area reflects a health issue that matters to our community, with clear objectives guiding the work we do and why we do it.

Priority 1: Increase Healthy Eating

We want healthy, affordable food to be an easy choice for everyone in Heathcote, at home, at school, at the footy club, and everywhere in between.

Objectives:

  1. Create supportive environments for healthier eating habits within Heathcote Health and across a range of community settings
  2. Foster sustainable food systems across Heathcote
  3. Promote improvements in oral hygiene

What this looks like in practice:

Supporting Heathcote schools, out-of-school-hours care (OSHC), early learning centres and sports clubs to put the Achievement Program and Vic Kids Eat Well healthy eating guidelines into action

Helping local cafés and restaurants join the Healthy Eating Advisory Service's Catering for Good Directory, and promoting local businesses who take part

Supporting the rollout of Greater Bendigo’s Food System Strategy here in Heathcote

Running practical, community-facing projects, including a food system audit across local schools and early learning services, and a new initiative helping parents build the skills and confidence to prepare healthy, low-cost lunchboxes and meals for their kids

Priority 2: Increase Active Living

We want it to be safe, easy and appealing for everyone in Heathcote to be physically active, whatever that looks like for them.

Objectives:

  1. Create supportive environments for active living across Heathcote

Objectives:

  1. Create supportive environments that promote positive mental wellbeing
  2. Increase resilience in children and adolescents experiencing poor mental wellbeing

What this looks like in practice:

Publishing regular Health Information Hub articles in the McIvor Times to improve community health literacy through content that’s local and easy to access

We want to make sure fairness and inclusion are built into everything we do – from the services we deliver to the way our community works together.

Objectives:

Apply a gender lens to all new and existing policies, programs and services, both within Heathcote Health and across the Heathcote community

Support community-wide action to advance gender equity and prevent gender-based discrimination

What this looks like in practice:

Conducting Gender Impact Assessments (GIAs) on new or reviewed policies, programs and services, and wherever gender discrimination has been identified

Priority 6: Alcohol and Other Drugs

We want older Heathcote residents in particular to feel supported, connected and safe when it comes to alcohol use.

Objectives:

  1. Address the risk factors for older adults in Heathcote associated with alcohol and other drug use, through social connectedness, education and capacity building

What this looks like in practice:

Leading the Heathcote Local Drug Action Team (LDAT), coordinating local, community-driven action on alcohol-related harm
