Our Services
Heathcote Health is a leading small rural health service located 90 minutes north of Melbourne via the Northern Highway, and 40 minutes south-east of Bendigo via the McIvor Highway. We are a 9-bed public facility which provides public and private acute care, 24 hour urgent care, district nursing, and a broad range of community and home-based services. Heathcote Health also has a 42-bed residential aged care facility.
Our catchment provides services to the Heathcote community and its surroundings. Heathcote Health is one of the largest employer in Heathcote with over 200 staff caring for our community.
Acute Ward
On our Acute Ward we have 9 beds, 2 of these are palliative care rooms and 2 are allocated to the TCP program.
What do we do?
Our nurses are highly trained with Registered Nurses maintaining Advanced Cardiac Life Support accreditation and are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We strive to provide excellent care to our community that meets their expectations.
Doctors from the St Antonys, Heathcote Primary Health clinic provide support during the week and are available on call after hours on weekdays.
Patients are admitted under the care of the GPs and in consultation with the nurse in charge.
What can you expect?
High quality care from our nursing staff. In addition, Allied Health staff are available onsite and are involved in your care if required. Our hotel and
support services staff (kitchen, cleaning and maintenance) work closely with the nursing staff and are integral in making your stay as comfortable as possible. Discharge planning is undertaken by our staff in consultation with you. You will be provided with an up to date medication list, follow up
appointments and services that have been organised to help you once you are home.
We are fully accredited under standards developed by the Australian National Safety and Quality Health Service Commission.
Urgent Care Centre
Our Urgent Care Centres operate 24 hours a day and seven days a week. For life threatening emergencies including chest pain, snake bites, serious injuries and possible fractures, please do not delay and call 000 for an ambulance.
Where is our Urgent Care Centre located?
Heathcote Health Urgent Care Centre can be accessed via the front of hospital – please press door bell for assistance.
What do we do?
Our Urgent Care Centre is a walk in service for people with minor illnesses and injuries requiring immediate attention. The centre is not staffed 24 hours but will be attended by our nurses from the Acute ward as needed. Depending on your clinical needs, the nurse may consult with one of our GPs or with VVED – Victorian Virtual Emergency Department (an off-site telehealth service).
If you are seen by one of the GPs you will incur an out of pocket fee Our nurses are highly trained Registered Nurses who maintain annual Advanced Cardiac Life Support accreditation and advanced assessment capabilities. We also have a small number of Rural and Isolated Practice Registered Nurses (RIPRNs). RIPRNS are nurses who can administer a small, and controlled amount of medications without the prescription of a GP or Health Service doctor.
What can you expect?
When you arrive you will be assessed by one of our nurses and triaged accordingly. The most urgent cases will be seen first. If you require care that cannot be provided by us, you will be transferred to a larger hospital, usually Bendigo Health Emergency Department. If you are transferred by ambulance, you are responsible for the cost. For Ambulance Victoria members and pensioners this cost will be covered.
Not sure when to use the Urgent Care Centre?
Urgent Care Centres are for those who require immediate attention for minor injuries and illnesses
Our aim is to provide the most appropriate care for you as close to your home as possible.
If you require medical advice for a general condition, contact your GP during business hours.

As a goal-based program, the nursing and allied health staff will work closely with you, your family or carer, to set your individual goals and choose services that will best suit your needs. We aim to assist you to achieve further improvements in function with the plan of continuing to live independently, or, alternatively make appropriate long-term care arrangements.

Physiotherapists assist in assessment and diagnosis of a person’s condition to identify the underlying cause of their impairment or pain. They develop treatment plans tailored to a person’s goals and guide people through their rehabilitation programs to achieve the desired outcome. Physiotherapy involves a broad range of interventions including exercise, manual therapy and education to improve function, reduce pain and prevent further injury or illness.
Conditions treated by a Physiotherapist include musculoskeletal issues (e.g. back pain, Osteoarthritis), sports injuries (e.g. sprains, strains), neurological conditions (e.g. Stroke, Parkinson’s disease) and cardiorespiratory conditions (e.g. COPD, post cardiac surgery).
